Live View Not Working
Live view is spinning, showing an error, or choppy. Here's how to fix it.
Live View Not Working
You tapped Live View and it's spinning, showing an error, or the picture is choppy. Here's how to fix it.
First: check your daily streaming limit
If you're on the Free plan, live view is limited to 5 minutes per day. If you've used those 5 minutes, the stream won't open again until midnight.
The app doesn't show a countdown. When today's minutes run out, live view shows Time limit reached.
If you want unlimited live view, upgrade to Plus ($9.99/mo) — see Free vs. Plus.
Check both connections — your phone and your camera
Live view needs two things working at the same time:
- Your phone needs an internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular)
- Your camera needs to be online and connected to your home Wi-Fi
Open the app home screen. If your camera shows an "offline" badge, start with Camera Went Offline before troubleshooting streaming.
Common fixes
1. Close the app and reopen it
Simple, but it fixes about half of one-off streaming issues. Close the LightCam app fully, reopen it, and try live view again.
2. Your phone is on a slow or unstable connection
Live view uses roughly 1–2 Mbps. If your phone is on a weak Wi-Fi signal or a congested cellular connection, the stream will buffer or fail entirely.
Try switching your phone between Wi-Fi and cellular to see if one works better. If cellular works but home Wi-Fi doesn't, the issue is your router — see the next step.
3. Your home network is the bottleneck
If live view works on cellular but not on your home Wi-Fi, the camera and your phone may be on different network segments (e.g., one on 2.4 GHz, one on 5 GHz), or there may be a bandwidth issue on your router.
- Make sure your phone and camera are on the same Wi-Fi network name (not one on a "guest" network and one on the main network)
- Restart your router: unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait 2 minutes
- If you have a dual-band router (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz), try connecting your phone to the 2.4 GHz band — the camera uses 2.4 GHz and some routers don't route traffic efficiently between bands
4. Video is choppy or pixelated
This is a bandwidth issue between the camera and the cloud, not a hardware defect.
- Move the camera or your router closer together, or add a Wi-Fi extender
- In Settings → [Camera Name] → Video Quality, lower the stream quality if that setting is available
- Try during off-peak hours (late night vs. early evening) to see if network congestion is the cause
5. "Failed to connect" error
This usually means the camera is online but something interrupted the stream handshake.
- Power-cycle the camera: flip the wall switch off, wait 10 seconds, flip it back on
- Wait 2 minutes for the camera to reconnect
- Try live view again
If it fails again after the power cycle, see Camera Went Offline.
6. VPN is running on your phone
A VPN on your phone can block live view. Turn off your VPN and try again. If that fixes it, see VPN Blocking the LightCam App.
