LightCam Privacy Policy – We Put Your Privacy First
Last Updated: 2026-10-22 · Effective: upon publication
Company: LightCam II, Inc.
Our Promise to You
Privacy is more important to us than revenue, features, or growth.
We built LightCam because we believe you deserve a smart light and security camera that respects your home and your rights. This policy explains exactly what we do with your data—in plain English.
1. What Data We Collect (and What We Do NOT Collect)
We collect only what we need to run the service
| What we collect | Why we need it | |-----------------|----------------| | Account info – Email, password (hashed), and optional display name | So you can sign in and manage your devices. | | Device info – Device ID, model, firmware version, basic diagnostics | So we can deliver the service, fix bugs, and push updates. | | Person-detection clips – Short video clips, recorded when your camera detects a person. Clips have no sound (see below). | So you can review what happened. Clips are kept as described in Section 7. | | Camera snapshots – Still images from your camera: one taken with each clip, and one taken periodically that shows the camera's current view (each new one replaces the last) | So the app can show a preview of each clip and of each camera. | | App settings – Things you choose, like notification preferences and light schedules | So the product behaves the way you set it. | | Subscription status – Whether you have an active LightCam Plus subscription, when it renews or ends, which store you bought it from, and that store's reference IDs for it (for lightcam.com purchases, also your card's brand and last four digits) | So we can turn on clip playback and unlimited live view for your account. | | Crash and performance reports – When the app crashes or runs slowly, it sends us a report: the app version, your phone model and iOS version, what the app was doing, and your IP address | So we can find and fix bugs. See Section 4. | | Push notification address – A token from Apple or Google that lets us send alerts to your phone | So you get person alerts. |
Clips have no sound. LightCam doesn't currently record or collect sound. Your camera does not currently record sound, and the app never records with your phone's microphone or camera. If we ever add an audio feature, we'll update this policy and ask you first.
Where you are. We don't read or store your location, and the app never reads your phone's GPS. (On some Android phones the system may ask for location permission while you set up Bluetooth; we don't use it.) Your IP address, which comes with every internet connection, is sent to our crash-reporting service along with its reports, and that service can work out an approximate place (a city or region) from it. We use that only to debug, not to track you.
About payments. If you subscribe through the app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple handles your payment and we never see your card number. From Apple we keep only what we need to turn the right features on: whether your subscription is active, when it renews or ends, and Apple's transaction and product IDs for it. If you subscribe at lightcam.com instead, our payment processor handles your card: we never see or store your full card number, only its brand and last four digits so you can tell which card is on file.
We deliberately do NOT collect
- No audio, today. Not from your camera, not from your phone. If that changes, we'll update this policy and ask you first.
- No constant live streaming to our servers. Video from your camera goes to the cloud when a person-detection clip is recorded, or when you open live view.
- No face recognition and no biometric profiles. Our camera uses on-device person detection to trigger clips. It does not compute, store, or transmit any facial-geometry template, faceprint, or biometric identifier capable of identifying a specific individual. See Section 7A for our full biometric data statement.
- No advertising data. We do not track you for ads, and the app has no advertising or ad-tracking tools in it.
- No sale of your data. Ever.
2. Where Your Data Lives (On-Device vs. Cloud) and How It's Protected
-
On the device (LightCam hardware) Your camera (built around an Ambarella CV28M chip) decides on the device whether a person is in view. Video is not sent to the cloud unless a person-detection clip is recorded, or you open live view.
-
In the cloud Person-detection clips and camera snapshots (see Section 1) are uploaded to our cloud storage on Amazon Web Services for every account, including the free plan. Playing clips back in the app takes LightCam Plus. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and encrypted at rest. We do not offer a local-only mode: the app has no setting to keep clips off our servers.
-
No 24/7 recording. LightCam records when it sees a person, not around the clock.
3. How We Use Your Data
We use your data only to:
- Let you create and use your account and manage your LightCam devices.
- Store the triggered video clips and snapshots your cameras create, and show them to you.
- Send you alerts and notifications you opted into (e.g., person alerts).
- Run and improve the service (e.g., fixing bugs, delivering firmware and app updates).
- Comply with the law when we are legally required to (see Section 5).
We do not use your video, images, audio, or personal data to train AI, machine learning, or any similar system unless you give us separate, explicit, affirmative consent each time.
4. Sharing and Selling – We Don't Do That
- We do not sell your personal information. Not to advertisers, data brokers, or anyone else.
- We do not use your data for advertising. We don't build ad profiles from your activity.
- We do not use your video, images, or audio for AI/ML training without your explicit, separate consent every single time.
- We do not share your data with third parties for their marketing.
We may share data only in these narrow cases:
- Service providers that help us run the service, listed below. They process data for us, and we don't allow them in our agreements to use it for their own purposes.
- Legal process – see Section 5 (we require a valid warrant or subpoena and will notify you when the law allows).
- With your consent – when you ask us to share something specific, and we tell you what.
Who helps us run LightCam
| Provider | What they do for us | What they handle | |----------|---------------------|------------------| | Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Hosts our servers and databases, stores clips and snapshots, handles sign-in (Amazon Cognito), sends email (Amazon SES) | Account info, device info, clips, snapshots, settings | | Apple | In-App Purchase: bills and renews LightCam Plus when you subscribe in the iPhone app. Also delivers iPhone push alerts. | Your payment (we never see your card), subscription status, push address | | Stripe | Takes card payments for orders and LightCam Plus at lightcam.com | Your card and billing details (we keep only brand and last four digits) | | Google Firebase (Cloud Messaging) | Delivers push alerts to your phone | Push address (a token), device type. The iPhone app doesn't send analytics events. | | Sentry | Collects crash and performance reports | App version, phone model, iOS version, what the app was doing, IP address (from which Sentry can estimate a city or region). In the released app, Sentry does not record your screen. | | Shippo | Buys and prints shipping labels for hardware orders | Your name, shipping address and phone number | | Storj (older camera software only) | Cameras on software older than our current release may still upload clips to Storj, a storage provider we are moving away from, instead of AWS. Those clips follow the same 90-day expiry. | Clips and snapshots from those cameras |
We don't sell data to any of them, and we don't send them data for ads. On lightcam.com, optional analytics (Google Analytics) load only if you accept them; see our Cookie Policy.
5. Government and Law Enforcement Requests – 4th and 5th Amendment Promise
We fully support the 4th Amendment (protection from unreasonable searches) and the 5th Amendment (protection from self-incrimination).
- We will not hand over any user data to law enforcement, governments, or third parties without a valid court-issued warrant or subpoena (or other legal process we are legally required to comply with).
- When we receive a request, we will notify you as soon as we are legally allowed to so you can exercise your rights (e.g., challenge the request, seek legal advice).
- We do not have "emergency" or "exigent" back doors that let authorities access your data without proper legal process. If the law ever requires us to respond to a type of request without prior notice, we will still require that the request be legally valid and we will notify you when we are permitted to do so.
If you have questions about how we handle government requests, contact us at privacy@lightcam.com.
6. Your Rights
Depending on where you live (e.g., California, Virginia, Colorado, and other states with privacy laws), you may have the right to:
- Delete your data – Delete your account yourself in the app (Settings → Account → Delete my account), or email us. We erase your account and your stored clips within 30 days, except where we must keep data for legal reasons (see Section 7).
- Download your data – Request a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Correct your data – Ask us to fix inaccurate personal information.
- Opt out of "sale" or "sharing" – We don't sell or share for cross-context advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of for that. You can still ask us to limit use of sensitive data if your state gives you that right.
- Cloud clip storage – The app does not currently have a setting to turn off cloud storage of clips, and you can't delete a single clip. Clips expire on their own 90 days after they are recorded, or sooner if you delete your account (see Section 7).
To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@lightcam.com. We will respond within the time required by applicable law (e.g., 45 days under many state laws).
7. Data Retention and Deletion
- Clips and snapshots in the cloud: Kept for 90 days from when they were recorded, then automatically deleted. This applies to every account, including the free plan: clips from free-plan cameras are stored in the cloud too, even though watching them in the app takes LightCam Plus. How we store free-plan clips may change; if it does, we will update this policy. The app does not let you delete individual clips.
- Deleting your account: In the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete my account. We erase your account details and your stored clips and snapshots, and we remove your cameras from your account. Your data is permanently erased within 30 days. Deleting your account in the app also cancels any LightCam Plus subscription you bought at lightcam.com. An Apple subscription can only be cancelled with Apple: Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions. If you delete from the web dashboard instead, saved clips are not purged on request; they expire on their normal 90-day schedule.
- What we may keep: Order and billing records, where the law or our accounting requires it. We remove your name, email and address from them; the phone number on an order is kept for now. Stripe keeps its own payment records under its own privacy policy. A record that a deletion happened, including your email address, is kept for 90 days.
- Backups and logs: Some data may remain in backups or logs for a short period after deletion; we overwrite or delete it as soon as our systems allow.
7A. Biometric Data
LightCam cameras use on-device processing to detect the presence of people in view. This processing runs entirely on the camera and does not compute, transmit, or store any facial-geometry template, faceprint, or biometric identifier capable of identifying a specific individual; no biometric information is sent to LightCam's servers. We do not use facial-recognition technology — the camera detects that a person is present, not who they are. Your saved clips may incidentally show people's faces, but those clips are ordinary video; we do not process or store them as biometric data or face templates.
To the extent any on-device processing is ever determined to constitute a biometric identifier under applicable law, LightCam retains such data only for the duration of the detection event and never sells or profits from it, and destroys it upon account termination or satisfaction of its purpose, whichever is first.
8. Security and Breach Notification
- We use industry-standard security measures: encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and secure development practices.
- If we learn of a security incident that is likely to affect your personal information, we will notify you and, where required, regulators without unreasonable delay (and within the timeframes required by the states that apply to you, e.g., 30–60 days where specified).
- We will describe what happened, what data was involved, and what steps we are taking.
9. Children's Privacy
LightCam is not intended for use by children under 13 (or under 16 in some jurisdictions). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected a child's data, contact us at privacy@lightcam.com and we will delete it.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version with an updated "Last updated" date and, for material changes, we will notify you (e.g., by email or in-app notice) and give you a chance to review before the change takes effect where required by law.
